Middle East & Central and South-East Europe Cross-Regional Exchange Meeting

ross region exchange meeting – the first of its kind – bringing together HIV activists from Central and South East Europe and Midle East took place from 14 to 16 of November 2014 in Istanbul, Turkey. The main purpose of the Cross Region Exchange project overall is to strengthen community responses to HIV, hepatitis and related sexual and mental health conditions in the low HIV prevalence countries of the Middle East, Central and South East Europe, primarily through cross-region exchange, networking, capacity building and trainings.

Main topic of the meeting was overview of the current situation in the countries of the region as well as trends related to HIV transmission and response to HIV, and success stories and best practices in particular. The meeting also included analyses of the meeting that people living with HIV and HIV activists face, as well as potential areas for cooperation.

Key potential areas of cooperation recognized in this meeting were:

  • Support for PLHIV and comprehensive healthcare
  • Development and sharing resoruces and capacities for community based response to HIV
  • Laws, discrimination and employment
  • Research, and evidence based data

Some of the first steps of the cross region cooperation will include capacity building and empowering the community in the regions and individual countries.

The meeting was organized as a joint activity of Zaedno Posilni from Macedonia, MARSA clinic from Lebanon, and with support of HIP (International HIV Partnerships) and ViiV Healthcare.
